Poupée Kinky sat down with me to discuss her natural hair journey. I stumbled upon her YouTube channel a few months back and was instantly drawn to her content. Her hair texture is beautifully coily and incredibly voluminous. Like many of us, she experiences different curl patterns, with the front being a bit looser and the back much tighter. Poupée Kinky, whose real name is Daniela, maintained her natural hair until she was 19, when she got her first relaxer. However, that relaxed journey was short-lived, primarily due to the high cost of maintenance. In 2011, she embarked on her natural hair journey once again.
Why did you go back to natural hair?
I went back to natural hair because relaxing no longer suited me. I wanted to have curly, voluminous hair, a bit like the curl I tried to do, but which didn't work on my hair. I then decided to get locks, and that's when I discovered YouTube. Many girls wore their natural hair with beautiful hairstyles like twist-outs, braid-outs, and so on.
I told myself, I want the same thing, and even though I didn't really believe it, out of curiosity, I embarked on this hair journey.

Did you encounter any difficulties in your hair journey?
At the beginning of my hair journey, during transition, I wore protective hairstyles for a year. As my coily hair grew, I cut off the relaxed parts. I didn't really know my hair. Maintaining my hair's hydration was one of the things I struggled to manage.
Finding a hair salon that satisfies me and meets my expectations is difficult to find.

What is your hair routine?
First of all, my hair is not a priority; it shouldn't stop me from living my life! My routine is simple! However, when I do take care of my hair, roughly every 2 weeks, it's a deep cleanse! I pamper them.
The main steps: oil bath, shampoo, deep conditioning mask, hydration & sealing.
For the oil bath, I mix with the oils I have on hand: olive oil, castor oil, coconut, jojoba… then I do a single shampoo that I leave on my scalp for 5 minutes. The deep conditioning mask is a combination of moisturizing products. It consists of various products, a lot of conditioner, glycerin, oil of my choice, a little protein, a few drops of essential oils.
I like to use Indian powders from time to time, Rhassoul and Henna.
Your go-to products?
The hair milk from Les Secrets de Loly and the styling cream from Entwine.
How do you style your hair daily?
Contrary to popular belief, a short cut is not easy to maintain; you have to style it every morning!
Extensions, I do them sometimes, but it's time-consuming! I'm too lazy! The quickest option for me, and what comes closest to a natural look, is crochet braids. I really like this hairstyle because it allows you to maintain your real hair, and I keep it for a maximum of 1 month.
Otherwise, I mainly create protective hairstyles with my own hair.

Based on your experience, what advice would you give to those who want to keep their hair natural?
Going natural is a personal choice; you definitely shouldn't just do what your neighbor does.
Regardless of the products, you need to learn to know your hair by testing different methods.
