TIPS: TATTOOS ON DARK SKIN

Índice

In recent years, tattoos have become incredibly popular. Many of us proudly sport one or more pieces of body art. Yet, despite evolving attitudes, misconceptions and even prejudices about tattooing on darker skin tones still linger. People often ask: Can dark skin be tattooed effectively? Are all tattoo colors visible and vibrant on dark skin? Are there increased risks when getting tattooed if you have a darker complexion? I'll delve into these questions and more in this article.

Obviously, tattooing dark skin is perfectly possible. The main challenge of tattooing on dark skin is the skin's thickness and its lack of transparency. To create a tattoo, dyes are injected into the dermis. The ink settles beneath the dermo-epidermal junction, which separates the epidermis from the dermal tissue. This junction is an intermediate skin zone in perpetual mutation. Melanocyte cells, whose role is to pigment the skin and regulate tanning, are the constitutive elements of skin pigmentation. To simplify, the stronger the intensity of natural pigments in dark skin, the less transparency there is, and the less visible a tattoo's ink will be. In other words, the darker your skin, the less visible the tattoo will be, while still remaining possible.

So, what inks should I use on my dark skin?

For your tattoo to be visible, you should primarily focus on black or gray ink. However, your tattoo artist will be able to determine, based on your skin tone, what the final rendering of your desired color will be. If you want a color tattoo, the shades must contrast with each other. If not, the final result could be disappointing. Avoid purple, which is not very harmonious with your skin tone, as well as yellow and white, which will fade over time.

Will my tattoo fade faster than on white skin?

When a tattoo has just been done, it is obviously ultra vibrant. However, it's possible for it to become dull after a few months. This depends, once again, on your skin, whether it's very dark or not. In that case, you'll need to go back for a tattoo touch-up. But rest assured, this is common for all tattooed individuals!

Do dark skins scar more?

Some dark skins can develop what is called keloids (tissues that form excessively around your wound). If you are prone to them, be cautious. Ask your tattoo artist if they are experienced with dark skin; this is also very important. Indeed, the artist might need to adjust their technique based on your skin by reducing the power and not going over the area too much!

Is laser tattoo removal possible for dark skin?

This procedure is strongly advised against for dark skin. Indeed, it could also alter the natural pigments of the skin. Result: scars and white marks... Whether you have dark skin or not, it's therefore important to think carefully before getting a tattoo. Especially since you've certainly taken time to achieve your beautiful brown complexion!
