Sun Protection for Dark Skin

Just because dark skin doesn't turn 'lobster red' doesn't mean it's immune to the sun's damaging effects!

First of all, there isn't just one but several black skin tones - about 35 - ranging from amber to ebony. It's the melanin present in large quantities that colors the skin. The darker the skin, the better it is protected against sun rays and skin aging. Light mixed-race skin tones are therefore more exposed to sunburn.

However, all types of black skin are susceptible to skin cancer and especially dark spots. These darker areas, linked to acne, alcohol-containing cosmetics, or hormonal factors, become more pronounced if exposed to the sun.

It is therefore important to use good sun protection. An SPF 15 is often recommended for bodies not accustomed to strong sunlight (children, people living in temperate countries) and a total block on spots and sensitive areas like the face). To avoid a grayish complexion, prefer sunscreens with transparent filters.

Don't forget your eyes and lips. They too are sensitive to the sun's rays. To prevent cataracts, always carry your sunglasses with you and a moisturizing balm to prevent dry lips.
