Hallelujah! Ladies, our prayers have been answered! We and our gorgeous natural hair can finally hit the pool with confidence, thanks to Swimma brand swim caps. These are the first swim caps specifically designed to protect our precious coils and curls.
We've all experienced that tricky situation at the pool: putting on a swimming cap. Even if this operation is complicated for everyone, it turns out that when we have kinky and curly hair, it's even more so. Indeed, it's not easy to fit our mane or our braids into that tiny piece of plastic. Fortunately, to help us, South African photographer Nomvuyo Treffers had the idea to create Swimma, a brand of swimming caps with different sizes, specially adapted for voluminous Afro hair and hairstyles like braids, twists, or dreadlocks. Marketed in South Africa, Swimma is the first swimming cap brand for Afro hair. You can also get them on the official website right here: http://swimma.co.za/wp3/
SWIMMING CAPS TO PROTECT HAIR
Designed and conceived for us, Swimma swimming caps mark a real turning point in the world of Afro beauty. This essential pool accessory is evolving thanks to Nomvuyo Treffers' motivation and frustration. This young woman struggled to find a swimming cap that fit her hair and therefore decided to create her own swimming cap brand: “I started to wonder how a country like South Africa, with the demographics we have, we don't have a product like this for Black people,” says the creator. Mother of two young girls, Nomvuyo Treffers thought of the whole family by also creating a range for children. Furthermore, Swimma Caps are made with a thick silicone material to prevent damage to natural hair and protect it from chemicals, especially chlorine, used in the pool.
SELF-ACCEPTANCE
Nomvuyo Treffers works with schools in Cape Town and Johannesburg to provide Swimma Caps to students. Always with the aim of normalizing and de-stigmatizing Black skin and kinky hair, Swimma Caps has offered Treffers the opportunity to teach young girls to accept the volume of their Afro hair and their skin colors. A small step for man but a giant leap for Afro beauty!
