Loc Root Maintenance: Latching and Crocheting

While these techniques can be adapted for various hair types, for kinky/coily hair, latching and crocheting are primarily used to repair damaged locs or for interlocking. These methods serve as effective techniques for root retightening, often as an alternative to traditional palm-rolling or twisting.

Materials needed:

- A latch hook, or if you don't have one, a bobby pin will do
- A rat-tail comb
- A water-based gel or a spray lotion

Step 1:

Take a lock at the root, apply your gel or lotion, redefine the parting if necessary by gathering loose hairs, then use the comb to detangle the new growth.

Step 2:

Take your hook, insert it at the root, place the tip of the lock onto the hook or into the bobby pin, and pull it through the lock.

Repeat this step several times, but be careful not to pass the tip of the lock through the same hole twice. Once to the left, once to the right, once up, once down, and so on. Otherwise, you risk having Y-shaped roots, which is not very aesthetic.

Do not pull too tight; you risk weakening the new growth and promoting lock breakage. You should not feel pain in your scalp.

Step 3:

For a better effect, on wet locks, you can do palm rolling.
